问题     Advances in science and technology helped solving many problems. However, they have also caused new problems. Discuss some of the new problems brought by the advance of technology and give your opinion on how they should be dealt with. Write a composition of about 400 words to state your view.

答案                 Problems Caused by Technological Advance
    Science and technology is progressing and it has provided us many conveniences. In fact, we call say almost everything that makes our life easy and comfortable is brought about by technological advance. However, some new problems come along, among which the most critical ones are environmental and ethical problems. If we do not pay enough attention to them and try to work out some solutions, they can seriously affect the happy life we are enjoying now.
    Environmental problem was first noticed after the first great technology breakthrough — the Industrial revolution. Ever since, environment gets worse than ever before. Pollution caused by chemicals is very serious because it destroys the ozone layer. Without the ozone layer, not only we ourselves but also all plants and animals are exposed to dangerous rays from the sun. Aerosol can emit chemicals which break down the ozone layer. Refrigeration and air-conditioning systems and cars also contribute to harmful emissions. And perhaps the most serious threat to the planet is the warming of the earth’s atmosphere, which will result in floods, possible starvation and certain diseases. There are other problems caused by pollution. Human health is threatened by the poisonous gases and chemicals discharged by factories. Thus, the quality of our life is lowered.
    Technological advance also arouses ethical problem. We know technology is developing fast, maybe too fast for the not-so-fast-developing ethical and moral levels. To some of the questions raised by technological advance, we have no ready answer. For instance, do we have the rights to clone animals, or even human beings? Do we have the rights to use technology to destroy others? Do we have the rights to do whatever we want? The paradoxical fact is that technology can be used for both good and evil. Therefore the ultimate question will be how we should use technology. That is a problem that there is no definite answer yet.
    Surely we can not stop developing technology because of the problems. We just need to find the solutions from where the problems emerge. We should rely on technology advances to solve the envir-onmental problems and try to make up the damages we have done. We should build up the spirit of altruisms which will eventually guide technological advances in the direction of human welfare.
