Nowadays, WeChat, a new kind of web communication tool has gained popularity, especially its shake-shake and drift bottle functions make the users get contact with people nearby quickly. However, some people are worried about the potential risks brought about by WeChat’s positioning function when using it to socialize with strangers. As far as I am concerned, it goes to extreme to abandon an invention just because of potential risks.
Firstly, WeChat fairly brings about great convenience to users for communication. It overtakes other web communication tools in several aspects. One is that it consumes less data flow compared with other tools like QQ, especially when sending an audio clip to replace text messages. Another is its shake-shake and drift bottle functions which allow users to randomly connect to other users close by. Also, its latest version contains games which ranks the user’s score among his or her friends and adds spice to games.
Secondly, WeChat pays more attention to privacy than other communication tools. For example, if A leaves a message about your photo, nobody but those who are also friends with A can see the message. This protects our privacy by restricting shares of information to people who have made acquaintance with each other. By comparison, with other tools, everyone, as long as they are listed as your friends, can see all your messages commenting or commented by others, which means they all know what others think about you. Doesn’t it sound weird?
Lastly, it is unnecessary to say no to WeChat due to the so-called "risks". If we have to abandon WeChat because of its positioning function, a large number of software with the similar function have to be abandoned as well, which sounds unreasonable and unrealistic. In addition, the "risks" depend on how we make use of WeChat. Of course, it is risky to let a total stranger know our location, but as an adult, we shall be equipped with the ability to judge when it is necessary and safe to utilize the positioning function. Such judgment is indispensable in a society connecting everyone together through the Internet.
All in all, while welcoming the convenience with WeChat, we have to take measures to guard against potential risks. As long as we are aware of the risks inherent in the software, we can safely enjoy the surprise sent by recent technological advancement.
