Is our society hostile to good people? According to a recent survey by China Youth Daily, 76.1 percent of the respondents say that our current society provides a "bad environment" for good people doing good things. On the other hand, the more optimistic would argue that each individual should try his or her best to do good things and be nice to others, instead of waiting for the social environment to improve. So, what do you think? Is a sound social environment necessary for people to have high moral standards and be good to others?

Is a sound social environment necessary for people to be good to others?
Throughout the history of man, there is one thing of eternity that shines in whatever conditions, directing human towards a bright path of civilization. The one thing, morality, grants people the ability to love and to be good to each other in times of good or evil. A sound social environment enhances this nature of man, but it is not a preliminary condition.
The kindness to others lies deep in human mentality and cannot be erased by the toughest surroundings. Under careful nurturance in mother’s womb, a human is born with the most precious gift from God — love, and from being loved men learn to offer this generosity to others. It becomes a merit of man that distinguishes us from brutal beasts that kill and slaughter in the dark wilderness. It is under such a universal love that Abraham Lincoln stood up against the southern slave owners to emancipate those in tears and blood, and it is under such human conscience that ordinary people accuse the terrorists and weep for the dead after 911. The nature is in everyone’s soul, providing people with compassion, devotion, and the courage to stand up against the dark side of society.
The sense of morality is not only a gift from above, but also an undeprivable part in life. Be good to others can benefit in multiple ways: it assists one end in times of need, fulfills the mental satisfaction of the other end, and helps build an orderly and friendly society. Even in the most indifferent society, one should not and cannot ignore the desperate yells from a drowning man. And even in poorest regions in south Africa, vulnerable children and dying old man are center of attention. We learn the lessons of sharing as we show kindness to others: the sharing of love, hope and beauty of life.
Last but not least, kindness to others makes the society a better place to live in, no matter how it once eroded to core. China today is under extreme and turbulent circumstances, but charitable man like Chen Guangbiao are making constant efforts to improve it through every tiny act. More and more people are answering to their calls.
To sum up, to be good to others is in the nature of man and the essence of life, thus it will last ever in the worst society. Moreover, the kindness of everyman will gather and emerge as a huge power that pushes the society towards a better place to live in.
