Yemen’s parliament has approved a law giving President Ali Abdullah Saleh protection from government charges. In return, Mr. Saleh will have to give up the office, which he has held since 1978. The law was negotiated by neighboring Gulf countries. It gives Mr. Saleh complete immunity from legal or judicial charges against him for crimes he supposedly committed during his 33-year rule. It is part of a deal signed in November and aimed at ending months of violence. However, the deal has been denounced by pro-democracy activists. They are calling for the President to stand trial for a violent campaign against anti-government protests in which hundreds of people died. The new law also gives a limited immunity to the President’s political aides. There is still some opposition to that part of the deal.
