    People are usually mistaken that fresh water is inexhaustible and take the tap water at home for granted. As a matter of fact, according to a study by WWF, "today, 41% of the world’s population lives in river basins under water stress." That is why we should analyze the causes of fresh water shortage and come up with some solutions addressing the problems.
    The problem of fresh water shortage is mainly caused by pollution. In some countries where manufacturing industry is in full swing, factories would pour out untreated water into the river, which seriously degrades the fresh water. Besides, the cattle husbandry produces animal manure, which ends up in groundwater and pollutes the fresh water as well.
    To solve the fresh water crisis, it is suggested that laws and regulations be made to ensure waste water and animal manure are carefully treated before being discharged. Any factory or farm responsible for polluting fresh water shall be shut down and punished accordingly. Moreover, we could cut the subsidy for water supply and even moderately increase the water price to send a message to citizens that fresh water amount is finite and should be cherished when used.
    In conclusion, fresh water is short in supply and deserves our attention and efforts to preserve it.
