How to Encourage People to Use Public Transport
The past 5 years have witnessed the rapid increase of private cars in big cities of China. More and more Chinese are able to afford a car and would like to buy a private car to improve their life quality.
Several factors contribute to the increasing number of private cars. First, it can be attributed to the great advance of people’s income as well as the dramatic decrease of car prices due to mass production Besides, the rapid expansion of highway systems around the country also encourages more people to use cars as their daily transport.
However, the rise of private cars has also brought some problems such as traffic congestion and air pollution. In some metropolitans of China, during rush hours cars are queuing in urban areas. The exhaust of these private cars also leads to increasingly severe air pollution. According to scientists, the global warming is closely related to the emissions of private cars. Therefore, in some sense, people’s life quality is decreasing.
In order to reverse this decline in the quality of life in cities, attempts must be made to encourage people to use their cars less and public transport more. The government should create a more comfortable and convenient public transport system so that the public would like to use public transport In addition, measures should be taken to raise the environmental awareness of the general public. Another direct measure is to impose heavier taxes on the ownership of private cars so as to discourage people from using private cars.
