     China has already stepped into an aging society according to international standards. Those beyond 65 made up more than 7 per cent of the national population. According to experts’ prediction, this phenomenon is going to continue for decades. Now the society is faced up with the issue of tackling the old people’s problems.
     First, the society should foster a social environment that champions respect and care for the old. This is prerequisite in tackling the various problems the elderly face. Without love and respect for the old, any welfare measure could not be implemented fully and for the benefit of the old. Though in most area, the traditional idea of loving and respecting the old still prevails, there are some young people who consider old people as economic and mental burden and are eager to get rid of them. Therefore, changing this kind of attitude towards old people is uppermost in ensuring that our Grandma and Grandpa lead a happy life. Second, based on the fact that the tradition of home care for the elderly faces big challenge due to the shrinking family size, a combination of family care, community-based services and social welfare necessary to help our old population in helping and supporting their lives. In this way, old people can enjoy the help and love from both the society and their families, thus relieving the pressure on their younger children. Third, old people not only need help, they can also give a hand in raising their grandchildren. If we treat them as precious assets, they may not only live a fuller life, but also make further contributions to our social and economic developments.
     At present, both the proportion of the old in the Chinese population and the number of retired people are increasing. How to respond to this phenomenon affects everybody now and in the future. We should combine community help with family care and offer help to them in every way.
