    (1) There is an ongoing debate about whether nuclear power should be abandoned. (2) Proponents believe that nuclear power poses many threats to people and the environment, (3) such as the problem of storage of radioactive nuclear waste, as well as health risks and environmental damage from uranium mining. (2) They also contend that there have been serious nuclear accidents, (3) e.g. Japan’s 2011 nuclear disaster.
    (4) Opponents, however, claim that nuclear power is a sustainable energy source that reduces carbon emissions and increases energy security by (5) decreasing dependence on imported energy sources. (4) They argue that problems like the risks of storing waste are small and can be further reduced by using the latest technology in newer reactors. (4) Besides, the operational safety record of nuclear power plants has been excellent compared to the other major kinds of power plants.
    (6) In my opinion, nuclear power remains a perfect alternative of fossil fuel and shouldn’t be abandoned due to some minor problems. After all, nuclear power has caused far fewer accidental deaths. Energy production from coal, natural gas, and hydropower has caused far more deaths due to accidents.
