M: This week, we will answer a question from a freshman, Erin. Erin would like to know what the term "Ivy League" means and where it comes from.
W: Actually, the "Ivy League" is a name for eight schools in the northeastern part of the United States. All but one were established hundreds of years ago when England had colonies in the area. The oldest schools are Harvard, Yale, Columbia, Dartmouth, Princeton, Brown and the University of Pennsylvania. (19)The newest, Cornell, was founded in 1865.
M: But sometimes we can hear the term "Ivy League" is used to describe a sports grouping of the eight schools, right?
W: Definitely, the schools’ sports groupings are also called the Ivies. (20)Many language experts believe that the term first appeared in the media. In the 1930s, a sports reporter called the schools in the grouping the "Ivy League."
M: Why was "Ivy League" used by the reporter at that time?
W: Why the reporter used the term is not completely clear. Some people say the term is linked to the ivy plant. And ivy does cover some of the grounds and buildings at the schools.
M: The term "Ivy League" is sometimes said in a disapproving way. (21)To some extent, some people think the eight schools and their students value themselves too highly.
W: It lies in that admission to the schools is very competitive. As few as seven percent of students who seek admission are accepted. All eight schools are private and extremely costly.
M: Admission to an "Ivy League" school can sometimes be easier among people who are rich, powerful or are related to former students of the school.
W: That is where their reputation lies in.
19. When was the youngest university of " Ivy League" established?
