Since yellow was deemed the noblest colour and green the second most, they were often applied in palace painting. Usually on palaces a dragon or phoenix was painted on a green background with large areas of gold powder or gold foil. The painting gave the structure a clear-cut and magnificently noble image over the background of the white granite basement. It was unique that such sharp colour could achieve artistic effects. The dragon and phoenix, in Chinese called Long and Feng, are totems of the Chinese people. They were used to represent emperors and empresses and were the main decorative patterns to be seen on imperial buildings.
