During the Ming Dynasty, the outer city was built and population increased sharply, driving the further development of commerce. In order to strengthen public security, fences were put around the entrance of many hutongs then. It was especially necessary to strengthen security measures in Langfangsitiao Street due to its many shops and stores; therefore, many tall and firm fences were put, from which the name Dashilan was derived. After hundreds of years of development, here has become an area boasting much prosperous commerce and many of Beijing’s time-honored businesses are located here.
