I want to talk about Vietnamese cuisine. [20] To many of you, it may sound just like Chinese cuisine or Indian cuisine, but in that part of the world where I come from, Vietnam, China, Korea, each country has a very distinctive style of cooking and making food. It’s very special for me that people appreciate Vietnamese food.
Vietnamese food is very nutritious, but much less spicy than Thai food. We use a lot of ingredients that are only in Vietnam. In Vietnam, the daily cooking is not much different from eating out. You eat almost the same type of food back home and in restaurants. There’s nothing too different from what you get in a restaurant, which maybe in other countries may be considered more special than the homemade food.
[21] One of the most famous Vietnamese dish is the spring rolls. And in Vietnamese, it’s called "nam". And since it’s very popular around New Year and, you know, for a feast, a New Year party and stuff like that So it’s called spring rolls. And Vietnamese spring rolls are very different from those made by American Chinese. And it’s made with very thin rice paper, instead of the thick one that you see that Chinese spring rolls are wrapped in.
Another special type of Vietnamese food is fish sauce. And fish sauce tastes very good, but not too many foreigners like the smell of fish sauce at first But once they’ve tried it, they kind of love it. In Vietnam, fish sauce is used almost in every meal. [22] We can fry vegetable with fish sauce. We can make it into sauces for dipping other food in. It’s very tasty. And here in America, fish sauce doesn’t taste like it tastes back home for me. So I really want a chance to have a good Vietnamese meal with real good fish sauce.
The food in Vietnam is, to me, it’s much tastier than the food in America In Vietnam we eat a lot more healthy food, not like in America, and people eat the steak without any sauce on it, which to me is very tasteless.
