T:Wow.You know so many Chinese legends.Where?did you get it?From whom?
Ss:I read it from children's books./My parents told?me when I was young./...
T:Yeah,I am proud of you.Anyone knows the?legend about Yu Gong?Please raise your hand.
(Some students raise their hand.)
T:OK.Good!Today we will listen to an article about?Yu Gong who moves a mountain.
(Justification:The free talk can help the teacher?know about students'existing knowledge about Yu?Gong Moves a Mountain.)
Step 2 While-listening(15 minutes)
Activity 1 Listening for specific information?Students listen to the legend for three times and an-swer the following questions.
①How many mountains were there near the old man’s house?
②Where would they put all the soil and stone from?the mountains?Why?
③Why did the man think that Yu Gong could never move the mountains?
④Why did Yu Gong believe that he could move the?mountains?
⑤Who took the mountains away?
Students discuss the questions in pairs.Then,the
teacher asks some students to answer the questions?and gives the right answers.
The answer:①There were two mountains near the?old man's house.
②They would put them into the sea because the sea?is big enough to hold everything.
③Because the man thought that Yu Gong was old?and weak.
④Because Yu Gong believed that his family would?live and grow,but the mountains could not get bigger.
⑤A god who was moved by Yu Gong sent two gods?to take the mountains away.
Activity 2 Listening for gist
Students listen to the legend for one more time in?normal speed and discuss in groups of four to sum-marize the main idea of the legend.The teacher checks?students'discussion results and concludes the main?idea of the legend.
Main idea:Through the story that Yu Gong moves the?mountains,the legend tells people that one can never?know what's possible unless he tries to make it?happen.
(Justification:Listening to the text for several times,most of the students will know the general informa-tion of the legend.)
Step 3 Post-listening(20 minutes)
Activity 1 Listen and repeat
Students listen to the legend sentence by sentence?and repeat it.
Activity 2 Retell the legend?Students try to retell the legend individually in their?own words in English.The teacher leads the whole?class to retell the legend.
Activity 3 Make up a short play?Students work in groups to rearrange the legend into?a short play.Several minutes later,the teacher asks?several groups to act out the legend.
(Justification:The language output activities can im-prove students'speaking skills.)
Step 4 Summary and homework(5 minutes)
Summary:The teacher plays a short video about Yu?Gong Moves a Mountain.
(Justification:The video will maintain students'in-terest to learn English.)
Homework:
(1)Students learn the new words and phrases in the?legend by themselves.
(2)Students think about what Yu Gong can do in-stead of moving the mountains and share their ideas?in the next class.
(3)Students choose another Chinese legend and?write a short passage about it in English.
