    Should the retirement age be postponed in China? This is a very complicated issue worthy to be considerd and answered by the society as a whole. Recently, the issue has engendered a storm of controversy all over our country.
    Some people contend that the retirement age should be delayed. First and foremost, longevity is an obvious trend in China. For males, the average age is 74. For females, the average age is 77. The present average retirement age for a female is 55, that for a male is 60. A man aged 70 — 80 retires a little too early at the age of 60. A woman aged 70 —80 retires a little too early at the age of 55. They strongly suggest that the retirement age for a man should be 65 and that for a woman should be 60. Secondly, the society’s financial burden is so heavy that the government has great difficulty in paying all the retirees’ pensions. Delaying the retirement age can relieve the government’s financial overload.
    However, other people argue that the retirement age should not be put off. To start with, putting off the retirement age will reduce the younger generation’s opportunities to work because the total posts for the whole society are limited after all. Secondly, those who are dissatisfied with their status quo are reluctant to put off their retirement age.
    In my opinion, people can retire in a flexible fashion. That is to say, those who are in poor health or have no enthusiasm for their jobs can retire ahead of time. Those who are healthy as well as able enough and have enthusiasm for their work can put off their retirement age.
