答案     After Beijing announced its plan of reforming China’s college entrance examination, or Gaokao in 2016, a hot debate ensued. Opinions are divided on whether it is right to place less emphasis on English.
    Some education experts believe such a change would be a signal to students that they should pay more attention to their native language than a foreign one. As a result, students can devote more time to the Chinese language learning, which is being used in every aspect of our life and work. Nevertheless, others believe the change in total points for Chinese and English is not likely to affect students’ knowledge of those subjects. Instead, it will only make the students endeavor to score higher in the Chinese examinations.
    As far as I am concerned, this change may have an adverse effect on those who choose to have an English major or study abroad in the future. However, the advantages of such reform outweigh its disadvantages in that it serves as one way to help relieve the heavy burden of Gaokao, giving students who are not interested in English more choices. Moreover, this change makes it possible for English teachers to focus more on practical skills like listening and speaking, apart from reading and grammar, which can help foster students’interest in English and improve their practical ability in using English in real life.
