    In recent years, debate has been growing over whether the one-child policy should be abolished. Some people maintain that it should be abolished as it has resulted in many problems. For example, it has contributed to the shortage of migrant workers in big cities, which will slow the development of the economy. Birth control has led to gender balance too, which is a very serious social problem now.
    Opponents, however, insist that we should stick with the one-child policy. They say that the current family planning policy, formed as a result of gradual changes in the past two decades, has proved compatible with national conditions. Besides, 200 million people would enter childbearing age during the next decade. Given such a large population base, there would be major fluctuations in population growth if we abandoned the one-child rule now.
    In my opinion, the one-child policy should be kept unchanged at this time to ensure stable and balanced population growth. However, it is advisable that the government should gradually relax regulations, for example by allowing two only-children to each have two offspring. This would be fair, easy to enforce and would also help to rebalance the population.
