Each of us seeks our own path to bliss (幸福). In accepting the Nobel Prize from the Swedish King in 1980, I said that I had been doubly blessed (祝福). For in addition to 【S1】______ the recognition and distinction represented by the Nobel Prize, the research 【S2】______ had given me indescribable pleasure, the ultimate high, which comes from discovery, the breaking of new ground, the entering into areas 【S3】______ man has not been before. This kind of bliss is not uniquely 【S4】______ to scientists only. Literature, music, art, even business, offers comparable rewards. It is there for all who venture beyond the realm of accepted knowledge and experience. Such adventures are 【S5】______ and demanding, but they are well worth the effort.
For me, the adventure began as a young boy in secondary school. There, I and a group of very bright classmates were denied the easy route to learning. The wide 【S6】______ of questions we directed at our teachers was rarely met with direct answers. 【S7】______ , our teachers encouraged us to find the answers for ourselves by steering us to books that held the answers, and most often to more than we had 【S8】______ . As we progressed to high school, the teachers encouraged us to ask questions that went beyond our and their knowledge and experience, and to speculate on matters we could not find answers to.
Looking back on that period, I realize now that encouraging young people to 【S9】______ for themselves the answers they seek is not the easier way to learn but it is the most rewarding. Developing curiosity and instinct for seeking 【S10】______ solutions are perhaps the most important contributions education can make. With time, many facts we are asked to learn will be forgotten, but we are less likely to lose our ability to question and discover.
A) instead B) accept C) itself D) expected
E) questions F) discover G) solutions H) challenging
I) reward J) creative K) discovery L) where
M) range N) available O) receiving [br] 【S5】
选项
答案
H
解析
由and后面的demanding来推断,此处也应是形容词。Challenging意为“挑战性的”。根据后半句的意思“它们是值得付出努力的”,前半句应该说明这些冒险的性质是“具有挑战性和有较高要求的”。
