A rich American went into a shop in London. He wanted to buy a watch. He saw a watch and he liked it a lot. But the owner (店主) asked five hundred dollars for it. At that time a young man came into the shop, took the watch out of the owner’s hand and ran out with it.
When the owner ran out into the street, the young man was already gone. The American went on. At the next corner he saw the young man with a watch in his hand. "Do you want to bay a watch, sir?" he said, "It’s only a hundred dollars." "The young man didn’t know I saw him stealing (偷) the watch," thought the American. So he paid at once and went back to his room with the fine watch.
He told his friend about the fine watch. His friend took a look at his watch and started laughing. He said, "You are a fool (傻瓜). This watch isn’t worth (值) ten dollars. I’m sure the shop owner and the young man planned (计划) this together."
