PHILADELPHIA—There is one area of women’s apparel retailing that is often overlooked, and that is affordable fashions. Most fashion boutiques focus on expensive collections by famed designers, with little consideration for fashion enthusiasts on limited budgets. Those who are looking for something different may want to visit Fashion Fun, an inventive new store at 6700 Ridge Street. It too focuses on new designs, but all of its clothing lines were made by young fashion design students and are priced affordably.
    Fashion Fun’s owner, Cara Baker, said she wanted to see "talented, up-and-coming designers have a chance to get their fashions displayed on store shelves." Baker, herself a former fashion model, has staffed the store with enthusiastic clothing experts. One of them is Sue Vetrini, who also designs and markets her own lines of fashions. "All the shop’s salespeople have a keen awareness of industry issues and trends," Vetrini said. "What’s more, the store is a great chance for anyone in the creative community to show off and sell things they make." As an example, Vetrini pointed out a colorful hand-made skirt created by Donna Patel, a fashion merchandising major at Crofton College. Baker added that a portion of the store’s earnings would be donated to the Young Designer Scholarship Fund, which is aimed at encouraging low-income students to study fashion-related majors.
    According to a press release, Fashion Fun hopes to have stores in 10 major cities within the next 3 years. The first Fashion Fun store opened its doors last winter in Miami, and enjoyed immediate success. Three months later its popular LA location opened, and that was followed by the addition of the Philadelphia store last month. A shop is scheduled to open soon in Adanta, and a London store is "being considered."
