The Consumer Safety Board(CSB)has issued a new set of policies for the proper handling of food. To conform to these new policies, we have revised some of our own internal regulations. Copies of the relevant sections have been posted in the employee lunchroom. The personnel department will issue a comprehensive document in a few weeks that includes our own changes.
Prior to ordering
Effective immediately, the purchasing control department must log on weekly to the CSB Web site at www.csb.gov to verify information provided about our farm sources’ crop conditions and insect infestations. In addition, beginning in May, the company will no longer accept shipments of potatoes that are more than 30 days old.
Upon arrival
Unsorted potatoes must be washed and stored immediately. The temperature setting within storage containers can be no more than 40 degrees Fahrenheit. Following the initial inspection for blemishes, shipments whose rejected portions are more than 25 percent of the total gross weight must be returned in their entirety.
Processing stage
Potatoes must be washed a second time after slicing in order to reduce the vegetable’s starch content. In addition, we will be applying a different chemical agent for color treatment that has already been approved by the CSB.
Lastly, all food handlers and machine operators are required to put on gloves, rubber aprons, and face masks. These items are to be deposited each day at the laundry department for sterilization.
