W: Good morning. You’ve applied for our company’s scientific laboratory technician’s position, right?
M: Yes. When I saw it advertised online I thought it would really suit me.
W: So could you briefly introduce yourself?
M: Well, of course. My name is Eden, and I graduated from Delaware State University. I majored in water conservancy.
W: How do you evaluate yourself in terms of strengths and weakness?
M: As to my strong points, I think I am patient, diligent, communicative, loyal and quick to learn. However, sometimes, I pay too much attention to details.
W: What do you mean by "pay too much attention to details"?
M: Well, I always try to attain perfection in my study and job as well, so sometimes I pay attention to every detail to make sure that the whole work is perfect.
W; Well, can you tell me why you replied to our advertisement?
M: Well, I’ve always enjoyed science and felt that this position would offer me an opportunity to extend my skills in this area. Also, I don’t hate my current job, but I have found it impossible for me to make ends meet with it.
W: Do you know exactly what you would be doing as a scientific laboratory technician, say, in our company?
M: Well, as much as I know, a scientific laboratory technician is responsible for laboratory-based tasks, which include sampling, testing, measuring, recording and analysing results in biological sciences. As to your company, I think the main task for a technician will mainly focus on the collection and analysis of water samples.
W: Well, sounds great. What sort of student do you regard yourself as... did you enjoy studying while you were at school?
M: Well, I suppose I’m a reasonable student. I passed all my tests and enjoyed studying subjects that interested me. I also successfully got the certificates needed for job.
W: What were your favourite subjects at school?
M: Maths and Science were my favourite subjects at school. I also enjoyed Literature and History.
W: Do you have any further plans for further study?
M: Well, I’ve thought about doing the part-time Chemistry Certificate course at Technical College. I think I will really benefit from doing that.
W: What specific goals, including those related to your occupation, have you established for your life?
M; Actually, I want to be an entrepreneur in the future, and I want to set up my own technological company. I have been working on it.
W: Good for you! Suppose our company wanted you to attend an institution to further your skills... How would you feel about this?
M: If the course would help me improve my prospects for promotion and help me to be better at my job I would definitely do it.
W: What qualities do you think a scientific lab technician should have?
M: Well, I think as a science technician, firstly, you should be able to work accurately and pay great attention to details. Then you should have good practical and technical skills. You should have a methodical approach to your work, and you should be good at concentrating and doing repetitive work.
W: We have a lot of other applicants for this position. Why do you think that you deserve to get the job?
M: Well, as I have mentioned above, my major is closely related to this job and my experience suggests that I would be quite capable of doing the work involved. I also think that I would be able to handle any training course:; reasonably well.
W: Now, do you have any questions you’d like to ask me about the position or about our company?
M: Yes. Could you tell me what is the prospect for the Lab technician and what training programmes do you offer?
W: Well, we have a specific plan for the Lab technician, if you work well enough, you can be promoted to the Director of that department. During this process, we surely offer some training programmes.
M: And I also want to know what hours I’d have to work, and for whom I’d be working?
W: We work from 8 a. m. to 5 p. m. and we hate working overtime. You will serve under Professor Kevin, the director of the department.
M: Thanks a lot for your information.
