   Examination has long been a way to test the students’ study achievements in the Chinese education system in the past years. Some people suggest that the examinations should be eliminated, because they impose too much burden on the students and become obstacles for the total development of the students. While other people hold the belief that examination should be kept and even be stuck to. In my opinion, we should keep examinations, but should make some adjustment of them.
   In the past, we put too much emphasis on exams, causing the misunderstanding of the purpose of examinations. Students thought they studied just for the exams, and if they did well in the exams, then they were good students. This is obvious evidence that exams bring about many problems. But our nation still needs them at the present stage, so we shouldn’t throw then, away; instead, we should adjust them to the new and real requirements of education.
   Exams should act as supervisors, testing whether students have grasped what they learned. By exams, teachers can generally understand how the students do in the recent classes and find in what areas they have problems, thus teachers can make new plans for their courses. Exams should be a way to urge people to do voluntary study rather than compulsory study, and help to select the real excellent ones for the universities and society.
   Examination, playing the part as a filter, is a very important component of education, but at present due to various reasons, it doesn’t have the effect that it is supposed to. However, we should not deny it because of its negative influences. We should make small changes of it, so that it can realize its original effects.
