    Recent years has witnessed too many food safety problems in China, which arouse the public fears and concerns. Just in 2006 three big cases had been disclosed: the first one is about Sudan Red IV , a cancer-causing dye, which was used by the farmers in Hebei Province to feed ducks to make the egg yolk red; the second is about carcinogens, which was used by the farmers to feed the fish but could leave harmful, cancer-causing residues to increase their disease resistance; and the last one is about apple snails, which were popular food in Beijing but was found to transmit parasitic disease.
    The scandals over the food appearing in China one after another reflect the weakness of governmental regulation and the dishonesty of some businesses. Although China has passed many laws and regulations concerning the food safety, lack of effective enforcement makes the lawbreakers can not get deserved punishment. Moreover, some businesses put the profits before the consumers’ health. To make their products more attractive, they u-sually put some chemical supplement, which is harmful and sometimes even cause serious diseases.
    Since food safety problems not only make the consumers scared but also disturb the order of the market, the government should take severe and urgent measures. The food firms without authorized production, business and hygiene licenses should be closed immediately. And a sound food quality supervision and management system should be established. At the same time, good companies should be rewarded by the government to encourage them to do better.
