问题 You will now listen to part of a lecture. You will then be asked a question about it. After you hear the question, you will have 20 seconds to prepare your response and 60 seconds to speak.
Question: Using points and examples from the talk, explain the two advantages the marine animals get from making electricity.
Hello everyone, today we are going to talk about a special group of animals. You may ask why they are special. They are special because they all have the common characteristic of creating electricity. Are you surprised? I am guessing yes. Animals can create electricity.
All living animals emit small electrical charges when moving their muscles. However, a distinct group of animals have a precise ’sixth-sense’ that allows them to both detect the electrical charges and use that electricity. These animals rely on their electroreception for hunting prey, fending off attackers, and navigation. To explain this I will give you two examples.
Eels, for example, produce strong electrical charges in order to stun their prey such as small fish, and eat them. The electrical shock is their way to hunt for food. Studies indicate that an eel can produce intermittent electrical shocks, without tiring, for an hour. This amount of electricity would be deadly for an average-sized adult human.
Brachyhypopomus bennetti, or knife fish as we call it, are another example. This kind of fish can generate an electrical field to avoid rocks in a dark environment. Electricity, for these fish, is a means of defense which can prevent them from getting hurt.
Now you know more about these marvelous creatures. This ends my lecture. Thank you.

答案 The professor talks about two advantages the marine animals get from making electricity.
The first advantage is to capture food by generating electricity. For example, eels can produce strong electrical charges to shock the small fishes. These fish are paralyzed or move slowly after eels’ electrical shock, which makes the predation much easier for the eels.
The other advantage of marine animals producing electricity is that animals can protect themselves from danger, like the knife fish. Knife fish can produce a current field to explore the dark environment. If there is a rock near the knife fish, the current field will change. Then, the knife fish can get this change, adjust their direction and thus avoid running into the rocks.
