You will read a short passage, listen to a talk, and answer a question about them. After you hear the question, you will have 30 seconds to prepare a response and 60 seconds to record the response.
Now read the announcement from the college newspaper about a change to dorm housing policy. You will have 45 seconds to read the article. Begin leading now.
Notice of Change to Dorm Housing Policy
Starting in the fall semester, freshmen and upperclassmen will no longer be housed in mixed dormitories. Instead, freshmen and upperclassmen will live in separate dormitories. This change in policy is expected to be a benefit to the incoming freshmen so that they will have more chances for interaction and networking with other new students. Furthermore, this policy change is also expected to increase the appeal of dormitory residency amongst prospective new students who are visiting the university.
Now listen to two students discussing the announcement.
In the listening the woman expresses her opinion about dormitory housing policy change. State her opinion and explain the reasons she gives for holding that opinion.
Now listen to two students discussing the announcement.
W: Did you read about the upcoming dormitory housing policy change in the newspaper today?
M: No, I didn’t. What changes are they making?
W: Well, starting next semester freshmen and upperclassmen will not be housed together in mixed dormitories.
M: Why are they changing this policy? Do you think it’s a good idea?
W: I really don’t see the need to make a change to the policy and I think it’s a bad idea. First, they say that this change will help freshmen have more chances to interact and meet other freshmen. However, I think that freshmen already have ample opportunities to meet each other. For example, freshmen have a lot of other freshmen in their classes and lectures. It should be no problem for them to make new friends.
M: I see what you mean. What else did the notice say?
W: It also said that having separate freshmen and upperclassmen dormitories will make the school more attractive to prospective students. However, I believe that it’s actually very beneficial for freshmen and upperclassmen to be living together. For example, freshmen can ask senior students questions and the older students can share their experiences and offer advice to the younger students. This will make the dorms more attractive to prospective students.
M: That’s true too. I think that there is a lot of help upperclassmen can offer younger students.

答案
The university has announced a policy change regarding the dormitory housing. Starting in the fall semester, freshmen and upperclassmen will have separate dormitories, instead of living together as before. By such an arrangement, the university intends to provide freshmen with more opportunities to interact with their peers. And hopefully, the separate housing will appeal to prospective students. However, the woman considers this policy change as a bad idea. The reason is twofold. For one thing, the classes and the lectures that freshmen attend have already offered plenty of opportunities for them to meet other new students. For another, she believes that freshmen actually benefit from living with senior students. Upperclassmen could give freshmen their advice and share with them their experience on life and study, which can help them better navigate the university life.
