Among major jor oil companies, Exxon, Mobil and Shell all reported higher profits, but all three say improved chemical operations offset sluggish profits at petroleum operations. Another U.S. company, Texaco, also posted better third quarter earnings mostly on cost cutting moves. Texaco sold its chemical business last year.
