Two protesters have been shot dead as thousands of people took to the streets of Pakistan in violent anti western protests triggered by cartoons of the Prophet Muhammad published in some European newspapers. Both who died were shot by security guards in Lahore when a bank came under attack. Demonstrator in Lahore destroyed vehicles and set fire to businesses, targeting US fast food outlets. They tried to storm the provincial assembly building and were driven back by police firing teargas. Private security guards at a bank fired bullets in stead, killing a number of protesters. Witnesses said the violence was unexpected and unprovoked. The Interior Minister Aftab Khan Sherpao said organizers didn’t keep their word to remain peaceful. Islamic leaders distanced themselves from the violence, saying they had nothing to do with it.
