Technological advancement and increasing number of college students are driving the trend of the introduction of online resources or even courses into college education. When more students are enrolled by the limited number of universities, especially when the faculties in these universities remain basically unchanged, alternative measures such as online courses would be a nice choice. And the nature of some courses makes the online version equally, if not more, effective while saving a lot of time and campus infrastructure. Some skill training programs, such as English listening skills training, information literacy training on computers, and software use in statistics and so on.
The benefits of such practices are obvious. Just as the reasons mentioned above, the introduction of online courses has greatly increased the efficiency of education of certain type while including more students in the learning process. And we should also keep in mind the interactive nature of the online format. Taking language learning as an example, more interactive activities to train the students’ speaking and writing proficiency are available on the Internet, with proper guidance from the universities concerned departments. Another benefit we can not ignore is the students’ information literacy that will be cultivated during this process. We live in an era in which it is impossible to imagine a qualified worker in many positions without the basic skills to use computers and Internet, and online courses will familiarize the students with basic operations on computers and Internet and provide a basic requirement for the students’ information literacy in practice. Last but not least are the benefits that such practice would bring to the general public. The introduction of the self-made online resources would also make it easier for others in need to share the intellectual products.
But we should also be aware of the nature of university education, and we can not simply rely too much on modern technologies such as online courses to finish the tasks we should shoulder. University education is not only skills training, we should never ignore the cultivation of a well-developed citizen when a lot of repetitive tasks are done by technologies for us. And the possibility of students’ using the bugs in our system to cheat should also be taken into consideration when we design the assessment system.
To put it in one sentence, just like any other technologies, we should try to make the best use of online courses while paying attention to the potential problems involved. If we bear the best interests of students in our mind, we will move forward in the right direction.
