答案             Old Buildings Should Be Protected in City Reconstruction
With the process of rapid urbanization, many people are pouring from the countryside into big cities, causing great housing pressure on city administrators. Large pieces of land are needed to construct housing buildings, and therefore many ancient buildings have been unfortunately wiped out to make way for new, modern ones. However, I think it essential to protect old buildings in city reconstruction.
Why are old buildings important for our cities? First, they are part of the city’s history, and are normally symbols of the city. Whenever we think of a city with a long history, we will inevitably think of those ancient buildings in it. We have the Forbidden City and the numerous hutongs in Beijing, the arcade-houses of Guangzhou, the Eiffel Tower of Paris, the Buckingham Palace of London, etc. Suppose all those buildings are torn down, what losses may have been caused to the cities? Second, the old buildings normally represent the culture of the city, the life of its people, and the technological and engineering level of the time they were built. These buildings can not only still serve their practical purposes but also be studied from different perspectives, which will definitely reveal much about the history of the city and its people. For instance, the arcade-house in Guangzhou may have much to do with its raining climate, and a study of the hutong in Beijing will surely illustrate how people were once related to one another. These buildings represent a very different life from our modern one, and to tear them down means demolition of our history. Therefore, these buildings must be protected.
But what shall we do to deal with the housing pressure? And should old city centers, where most ancient buildings are located, be left behind during the modernization process? I think the key to solving these problems lies in modern technologies and better city planning. For example, the development of subways has enabled people to go to and from city centers conveniently without having to tear down old buildings for the construction of driving space, and skyscrapers have made it possible to house far more people than ever on the same limited area of land. The practice of many cities has already proved that with thorough city planning, it is possible to protect the ancient buildings and meanwhile achieve rapid progress in the city construction.
To conclude, I think we must try our best to protect old buildings when we try to house everyone in the city. It is only a sign of inability if we resort to demolishing old buildings for more living space.
