答案                 Universities Should Not Teach Courses in Local Dialects
Recently, a survey has been made on purpose of finding out whether it is suitable for universities to teach courses in local dialects. According to the final result, 35% of the interviewees suggest that they agree with the view that universities should teach courses in local dialects while the rest are on the opposite side. As far as I am concerned, I am with the majority who believe that teaching courses in local dialects can make communication difficult, provide a hotbed for localism and affect the quality and efficiency of higher education.
First of all, teaching courses in local dialects will undoubtedly make communication between teachers and students difficult in that it’s hard to understand each other. As is known to all, our country, with a long history and vast land, has a huge population, which indicates that there are many dialects used in our country. If universities teach courses in local dialects, students’ attention will be easily distracted from what they are studying as the result of difficult communication. Thus, universities should not be advocated to teach courses in local dialects.
Secondly, a hotbed for localism will be provided if teachers in universities teach courses in local dialects. A dialect is not only a local language frequently used by local people, but also a symbol of regional identity. When traveling to or living in other regions, people may face, more or less, discrimination or bias if they cannot communicate with the local people in local dialects. Undoubtedly, such circumstances will breed localism which does harm to the unity of the whole country. Thus, universities should be cautious in deciding whether they should teach courses in local dialects.
Last but not least, if courses of universities are taught in dialects, the quality and efficiency of higher education will certainly be influenced. As a matter of fact, universities consist of students from every region of the country and most of them will find it difficult to understand what they are learning if their teachers use local dialects to teach courses.   Consequently,  the quality and efficiency of higher education will be affected, which is against the original purpose of this advocation.  So, universities had better not teach courses in local dialects.
In a nutshell, since teaching university courses in local dialects can make communication difficult, provide a hotbed for localism and affect the quality and efficiency of higher education, universities should not be advocated to do so.
