答案             Should College Recruitment Be Confined by Sex Ratio?
Recently, media report that some colleges are setting different entrance scores for male and female students to adjust the sex ratio in some majors, which have already sparked great concern and heated debate among the public. The practice is in response to the rising numbers of women getting into universities, where they are starting to outstrip men in some areas, especially languages. Opinions differ from person to person on this matter.
Some are in favor of the practice of setting the bar higher for female students, for they believe that it’s based on the consideration for national interests. Considering national interests, some colleges can adjust the sex ratio in some majors, in order to train special talents for some special industries or posts. Different admission rules between men and women in college enrollment are due to the requirements of some specific industries and positions. Some industries and positions require qualities that men are naturally better than women. For some special majors, such as criminology, female students must account for less because of the nature of their future career, but they achieve so high scores that finally be admitted. Another problem for universities is accommodation. Some universities have to put female and male students in the same dormitory building due to the lack of accommodation for female students.
Others hold the opposite opinion. They argue that different admission requirements between men and women in the college entrance examination expose gender discrimination in education, which harms social justice. The national university entrance exam, scheduled in early June each year, is of great importance because it is almost the only chance for most high school graduates to have access to higher education. If the authorities allow some colleges to raise women’s admission requirements above those of men, it goes against the principle of equality in education.
As far as I am concerned, on the one hand, it is advisable for some majors in specific colleges to adjust their admission requirements between male and female students following specific procedures based on the consideration of national interests. On the other hand, relevant authorities are supposed to reveal which colleges and which majors get approval to control the sex ratio and the reason behind it. If the educational authorities openly discriminate female students using the national interests as an excuse, it not only undermines the equality of the education system, but also does harm to the social harmony. What is demanded is a fair, reasonable and transparent college enrollment system.
