问题 Where was the donor’s meeting held?
A top Yugoslav official says the United States has pledged 181 million dollars in reconstruction aid to his country during a donors’ conference in Brussels. VOA correspondent Roger Wilkison reports the US pledge comes on top of similar commitments by the European Union, the World Bank and other donors.
Halfway through the all-day donors’ meeting, Yugoslav Deputy Prime Minister Miroljub Labus says he is optimistic his country can achieve its target of one and a quarter billion dollars in aid and loans for this year.
Mr. Labus played down suggestions that Belgrade’ s handover of former president Slobodan Milosevic to the international war crimes tribunal in The Hague fueled donor generosity. He says Yugoslavia’ s economic reforms have played a bigger role in spurring support for his government.
So far, Yugoslavia has received pledges for more than two-thirds of the target sum for this year. The European Union’ s executive commission has made the biggest contribution --450 million dollars. More pledges are expected as the conference continues.
