Medical teams are being dispatched to remote villages in India’s northeastern state of Assam to deal with an out-break of malaria that so far has claimed at least 18 lives by official count. Estimates of the number of people infected range from 3,000 to 10,000.the head of the Red Cross Society of Assam warned that the situation is grave.
     Anti-malarial drugs are being shipped to the region by the International Federation of the Red Cross (IFRC) An IFRC representative who visited the area last week his returned to Geneva with his assessment.
     Medical teams from the Indian Army are also helping. The government reportedly is concerned about the possibility the disease will spread among the hundreds of troops deployed along the Indo-Burmese border in counter-insurgency operations.
