On Choosing Careers
On choosing a career, parents generally believe that it is their responsibility to choose careers for their children. They claim that they know their children well enough to decide what kind of jobs fit them. Holding that their children are too young to understand the society and life, many parents insist that their children should obey them in absolute terms.
But many children suggest that they should be left free to choose their own careers. For one thing, parents and children may not share the same interests. A job that appeals to parents is likely to be boring for their children. For another, children have grown in a different social environment from that of their parents, therefore, they should be allowed to cultivate a spirit of independence and self-reliance. In short, children should be free to make their own decisions with regards to future careers.
In this case, mutual understanding is important. On the one hand, it is only natural for parents to take care of their children, but on the other hand it is, after all, the children who will do the job, thus their ideas should be the top concern.
