答案                 University Education: More General or Career-Oriented?
With college graduates encountering more difficulties in seeking jobs they desire, the discussion about what universities should focus on has become even more heated than before. And I prefer the option of general education as the focus of a university.
My first reason to make such a choice is that general education is a more lasting training about the kind of people our society needs. Career training can put the graduates into a particular position in our society, but general education can equip the students to be ready for many different positions in our society, depending on their personal preference and society’s requirements. And we should never forget what kind of roles universities are supposed to play in our society and the nature of them. Producing good quality citizens is much more important than merely training qualified workers for a certain kind. And we should clearly understand the difference between university education and career training. When preserving human wisdom, innovating technological breakthrough and maintaining the moral high ground of our society are attached to the existence of a university, we can easily understand how short-sighted it would be if we simply prioritize the career prospect of a university student.
With the above analysis, from the prospective of students as qualified citizens, social needs and universities’ role, we can come to this natural conclusion that general education should play a more important role in our universities.
