    Nowadays,in learning English, spelling receives the least attention among quite a few students. The reasons are simple but thought-provoking.
    Topping the list is the prevailing use of computers. Students in recent years are more inclined to handle their daily paper work by computer instead of handwriting. Since many word processing soft wares are becoming increasingly powerful to correct almost all spelling mistakes, the exact spellings of many words are usually neglected. Besides, some people hold the notion that as long as one is able to communicate in English, it is not at all important whether he can spell the words he uses or not. Thus they pay less attention to the spelling. Last but not least, our exams do not test spellings so much as they used to, shifting students’ attention to other aspects of English acquisition.
    In order to change the situation, due attention should be given to spelling. On the one hand, students should depend less on automatic spelling-check soft wares and pay more attention to handwriting. Practice makes perfect. On the other hand, teachers should highlight the importance of correct spelling and focus more on the skill instruction in spelling, such as pronunciation and word formation. Only by mutual efforts can spelling mistakes be eliminated.
