Listen to the following passage. Altogether the passage will be read to you four times. During the first reading, which will be done at normal speed, listen and try to understand the meaning. For the second and third readings, the passage will be read sentence by sentence, or phrase by phrase, with intervals of 15 seconds. The last reading will be done at normal speed again and during this time you should check your work. You will then be given ONE minute to check through your work once more. Please write the whole passage on ANSWER SHEET ONE.

Culture Shock
Every culture has certain basic ideas on which it is built / and which everyone accepts as true. / These are learned in childhood, / which are automatic to the people who live in that culture. /
When a person enters a new culture, / the basic customs and ideas that he or she automatically accepted / may no longer be true. / There is a new set of customs and attitudes to learn about and try to understand. / During this period of adjustment, / a person feels a great range of emotions, / such as happiness, excitement, loneliness, anger, discouragement and depression. / This process of adjusting to a new life is often called " culture shock". /
