M: Now we are showing you how to go green in every aspect of your life. And we start this series this morning with Debby Imus, the author of Growing Up Green! Baby and Child Care. Now her book is a road map for how to raise all of our children in a healthy and environmentally friendly way. We are just gonna show you some of the tips from her book here. But I have to admit that, already, I have a crush on you, Debby Imus.
W: Thank you, Simon.
M: Tell me why it’s even important for us to be thinking about raising a child environmentally from day one. Why is that important?
W: It’s important because our children are being exposed in all directions in the home. The air, our soil, and our water are all polluted.
M: Yes, environment is important. Let’s start with your house cleaning products. Anything special?
W: Yeah, they are all non-toxic products.
M: OK. In your book you speak highly of organic baby food. Why?
W: Organic means that all the food that you are feeding your child does not have pesticides (杀虫剂,农药). There’s a study that they found in conventional baby food over 16 different pesticides, just in a jar of baby food.
M: Oh! How many pesticides did they find?
W: Sixteen! And pesticides are horrible and linked with all the children’s illnesses, cancer, allergies (过敏症). asthma (哮喘)…
M: Let’s be fair. This costs more money than regular baby food right now, by about how much?
W: Well, it does cost more, but you can buy them in bulk (大批的). You can go to certain stores health food stores now that they are more cost-competitive.
M: OK, that’s helpful.
W: So, there’s an alternative. You can make your own baby food. I did that when my child was a baby. It’s easy to make, just mashing up (把……捣成泥状) the yams and the potatoes and the green vegetables. It’s easy.
M: So in that way, it isn’t more expensive. And you can keep…
W: No, it’s not. Yeah, a lot of them you can put in glass jars at home, and you save money.
M: There are so many more tips in this book. How about bottles, the container for your organic food?
W: Well, glass bottles are the gold standard for baby bottles. I highly recommend glass. For whatever reason, someone doesn’t want glass and there are healthier plastic bottles, but still it’s plastic. They are still toxic.
M: This was just wonderful. Again, that’s one of the reasons that I have a crush on you!
W: Thank you!
