Webquest is the term that has been coined to refer to an educational task that is carried out by means of the Internet. The aim of a webquest is to focus on processing information rather than simply copying it, and thereby to encourage analytic and critical thinking, especially among school-age learners. Typically, learners in groups are set a staged task which involves having to evaluate and synthesize information that has been found using the resources of the Internet. They then have to present the results to their peers in the form of an oral, written, or web-based presentation. The webquest concept fits neatly into the framework of both project work and task-based learning, and so has been adapted for the purposes of second language teaching. The basic model that has been used in first language education can be easily adapted for the purposes of ELT, so long as language-focused stages are incorporated at strategic points.
