答案                                    ENTHUSIASM FOR SPORTS
Modern sports are becoming more spectator-oriented than participant oriented. Just think of millions and millions of people who spend countless hours before TV sets watching sports of all sorts: Olympic Games, World Series Games and the World Cup Soccer Games. According to a survey, sports have the greatest number of viewers (78%) among various televised events. When an important football match is televised live, the streets of a big city are often left deserted. Even if it makes spectators dog-tired the next day, they can not tear themselves away from the screen. They are eager to know for sure the final scores. "True, the scores will be available in the morning paper," says a football fan, "but that’s not the same thing: what’s going on here!"
A passion for sports takes possession of thousands of people who go to stadiums, watch games on TV or listen to broadcasts. One of the primary causes perhaps is that sports can provide alternative outlets for emotions and alternative sources of satisfaction. Modern science and technology has reduced most of work and life to a routine. There is no variety, nor challenge, nor risk. Everything is predictable and controllable. Among the activities through which people seek release from their colorless existence or pent-up emotions, sports offer the purest form of escape and healthiest outlet. Sports can obliterate awareness of everyday reality, discharge the tensions of a day at work, satisfy the starved need for free fantasy and aggressive urge, and lift one to a moment of intense excitement and exhilaration.
Enthusiasm for sports also reflects the public "feeling." For most people it represents a common background, a shared interest. It has a binding power that transcends social classes and political views. Strangers may share nothing in the way of religion, education and politics, but the shared interest in sports is strong enough for them to get along and even become friends. Sports give people the opportunity to become a part of a community. Just because of the nature of sport itself and of human beings, sports can always incite in them a passionate enthusiasm.
