    (1) Whether to raise the retirement age has become a hot topic nowadays. (2) Many people see increasing the retirement age as a way to help address the financial challenges in the social security fund (2) And, they say, there are (3) compelling demographic reasons for such a change— increased life spans, increased working capabilities, and a structural demand for experienced labor.
    (4) However, many more were against raising the retirement age. (5) They argue that the pension fund has a surplus now. (5) Besides, a prolonged life span doesn’t necessarily mean that people are able to work longer. (5) More importantly, raising the retirement age would (3) put more strain on the already grave employment situation. Adding working years for those now employed would mean fewer openings for the new job seekers who are younger and healthier.
    (6) Personally, I think the government should raise the retirement age only when there is a severe labor shortage, relatively high pension payments or the government is in a fiscal crisis. (7) However, it’s apparent that our country now has none of these three scenarios. (7) Therefore, I don’t think it necessary to raise the official retirement age at present.
