    Recently, especially in winter holidays, plastic surgery hospitals in many large cities have received a growing number of young clients. Most of them are forth-year college students, who are hunting for their first job in society. They want their eyes enlarged or nose raised, believing that a prettier face will bring about better opportunities in the job market.
    Is beauty really an advantage? Docs it make a beautiful individual a more powerful candidate for the position? It seems so, at least in the eyes of the society. Nowadays, televisions, newspapers, magazines and bill-boards are beauty-obsessed as ever. Thanks to the media, we’re accustomed to see pretty cover girls, gorgeous TV anchors, and handsome executives in TV series. All these are spreading a misleading message--the survival of the prettiest. As the job market grows increasingly tight, many students become convinced that good looks are of overwhelming importance. They resort to plastic surgeries and expensive clothes and make up to build up their confidence. They package their appearance before going to an interview, in the hope that an attractive appearance will impress the interviewer and make them stand out among numerous applicants.
    It’s true that beauty is a marketing tool that can open doors occasionally, but it doesn’t follow that an attractive appearance will take you all the way to success. In. my opinion, beauty is skin-deep, and true beauty lies in the soul. After all, what the boss really needs is committed, competent employees that produce profits. If you really want to get on in today’s highly competitive world, it’s important to understand the myth of beauty. Our society should place more value on intelligence and character. Both the mass media and educators should help make the misguided students realize that the richness of mind is ultimately more valuable than good looks.
