    Idol worship has been prevalent among young people in today’s open and more tolerant society. However, what they adore are usually trendsetters like film stars, actors, singers and sportsmen, instead of statesmen or scientists who were worshiped decades ago.
    It is quite natural for fans to pursue a new lifestyle, but some obstinate fans have apparently gone too far. Copying idols’ manners and deeds blindly would make them hooked on excessive fancy and forget their own responsibilities, even bring about harms to their families. The tragedy of Yang Lijuan, a so-called "full-time fan" of Andy Lau, has triggered an outcry from the public over young people’ blind idol worship, and critics have questioned the younger generation’s faith and objectives.
    All in all, it’s of great importance to give young people proper instructions to help form their self-concept. In addition, parents should help wipe the negative effects of idol worship, directing their children to learn from some positive aspects such as their idols’ belief of success and their concern for the poor disadvantaged groups.
