M: OK, Mary! Can you tell me about your English success story?
W: It’s not a success story, but I can tell you how I learned. I don’t think I learned English as a foreign language, because I loved to listen to music, especially rock and roll, when I was a teenager. When you love music, you want to sing with it, so that you can memorize the whole lyrics and you know the stuff. So to me, it was like a hobby. It was pure fun for me.
M: Wow, that’s great! So did you listen without reading the words and the lyrics, or did you just listen and read the lyrics at the same time?
W: Hmm, both! Sometimes I’d see some words which I didn’t understand, so I’d look them up in the dictionary and check the meanings. Things were always like this.
M: So did you do anything else besides music?
W: What else? Yeah, the movie! I loved The Blues Brothers, which was one of my favorite movies, because that movie was interesting. I think it was the funniest movie and the greatest comedy in history. It was famous for its music, and I have the CD in my room.
M: You have it in your room?
W: Yeah!
M: Really?
W: Yeah, I do. So I saw that movie so many times. I don’t remember how many times I saw that. After the repetition…you know, after watching the same movie so many times you can memorize a whole, like words and sentences, what John Belushi was saying, what Dan Aykroyd was saying…So it was a great study for me!
M: Wow! That’s great.
W: But at that time I didn’t think that was studying!
M: Yeah, it was fun! So you enjoyed it!
