In today’s class I will give you some advice on how to write a good research proposal. First of all, you should remember to demonstrate that you are well informed about research already done in the proposed field. This will prevent you from making inaccurate claims about these researches in your thesis.
    Then, you should outline your thesis topic in terms of a clear set of aims and objectives; the key problems and research questions to be tackled; and the research methods and lines of approach to be explored.
    After that, you’d better explain clearly why you want to work on the topic proposed, why the intellectual problems are important and viable and how the project is distinctive. You should be able to make a clear and convincing case for the added value of the proposed research in terms of its contribution to the development of the field.
    Don’t forget to assess your existing skills and level of preparation for the topic of study. Indicate how prior training has helped you to focus the proposal, and how you have already developed—or are planning to develop—the relevant skills needed to work at doctoral level in the topic. You may think about skills such as another language, digital technology or similar.
