   Based on the child-parents relationship, psychologists have identified three types of parents: permissive, autocratic and authoritative.
   Confronted by a 15-year-old who wants to attend a Saturday-night party, a permissive parent might say: "Okay, but try not to stay out too late." Permissive parents are either indifferent to their kids or spoil the kids too much. An autocratic parent might respond, "No, you are too young for that." End of discussion. Autocratic parents dictate, down to the last details. The authoritative parent considers the child’s viewpoint, then decides: "You know our rule about weekends. We agreed on a 10 o’dock curfew. You can go to the party if you’re home by 10."
   Kids may prefer permissive parents and rebel against autocratic parents. Undoubtedly, the most beneficial to the children’s growth is the authoritative style, which gives them leeway but also sets firm limits. Coming down hard on every petty detail escalates minor disagreements into all-out warfare, and may alienate the children from their parents. On the other hand, allowing kids full freedom means leaving them growing wild. Only the parents who allow their kids freedom with responsibility, and within disciplinary limits, have more influence than either autocratic parents or permissive ones. Children with authoritative parents always enjoy a healthy environment in which to grow.
