Although there may be thousands of different kinds of iobs, as I see it there are basically only two kinds of work. One is the sort that is done for its own sake, and it usually proves rewarding in itself. The other sort is that which is done in return for a weekly wage, in factories or on building sites.
A research scientist may feel satisfied. He earns quite a lot for doing what be would do anyway even if he were rich.Others complain. But who doesn’t complain at times?
The worst thing of all is having a job that gives you no comfort at all. A factory worker says, "For eight hours a day, five days a weck, my life seems to be in a vacuum. Work to me means nothing." Another man may say." I have little other interest in the job than getting my money on Friday and getting out of the building as fast as I can."
An office clerk may say, "An office clerk produces nothing. He runs a paper chase which goes on from year to year, and seems utterly meaningless."
An advertising writer may feel guilty of earning so much just for writing the ads. He says, "Every time I’m asked to write the label for a tin of beans, I feel absurd. And every time my cheque arrives I’m glad I’m not earning as little as the girl who worked the machine that put the beans in the tin."
What are we working for anyway?
