In 1953 at the age of eighty-nine, Mary Terrell lost a court case that found that segregation was valid. In 1954 she died in Annapolis, but not until a few months after the Supreme Court’s decision making discrimination by race illegal.
    Ralph Bunche was born in Detroit and educated at UCLA and Harvard. He taught government at Howard University until World War IT. Bunche is remembered now for his part in the civil fights struggle, having marched in Selma and Nontgomery. But he, too, live Mary Church Terrell, served his government at very high levels.
    Bunche worked first for the War Department as an African and Far Eastern specialist, and later he worked as head of the colonial affairs division at the State Department. In 1945 he helped form plans for the United Nations, and in 1947 he became a director of the United Nations Trusteeship division. In 1950 he received the Noble Peace Prize for his part in the armistice talks, and he also received our highest civilian award, the Medal of Freedom. Just before his death in 1971, Bunche retired from the United Nations after twenty five years of service.
