Margaret Mitchell, the author of the enormously popular novel Gone With the Wind, died in 1949 at the age of forty-nine. She was killed by a reckless driver whose own excuse for his carelessness was "everybody does it".

In the summer of 1949, Margaret Mitchell had been considering beginning【S2】______again. It braked, skidded and veered(改变方向) as the driver attempted to avoid the threatening disaster. But Miss Mitchell, frightened, pulled away from her husband, and ran in the direction the car had veered. She was hit and fell ’unconscious. She died of a skull fracture after five days in critical condition.
The driver unconscious was sentenced to eighteen months【S5】______prison for involuntary manslaughter (过失杀人). He had already been arrested twenty-eight times in the previous ten years for reckless driving. Eight of the arrests had resulted in convictions(定罪).
