W: OK, just tell me in your own words what happened, Mr Philips.
M: I’ll do my best, but it’s all a bit of a blur.
W: Tell me as much as you can. It was about midnight, wasn’t it?
M: I’d say it was near one o’clock.(19)We were coming home from a holiday in. Germany, We had spent all day travelling, so I suppose we were pretty tired.
W: How far were you from home?
M: About half an hour. We were travelling fairly fast—the roads were empty and we were just looking forward to going to bed.
W: What’s the first thing that happened?
M: (20)We were driving under a bridge when there was a crash of breaking glass.jand something hit my left arm. I managed to keep my right hand on the steering wheel but I didn’t have much control over the car. Before I knew what was happening, we had left the road and were heading for a bunch of trees.
W: What’s the next thing you remember?
M: Well, everything happened so quickly. I remember waking up on the grass with people looking down at me.
W: And when did you realize what had actually happened?
M: (21)When one of the nurses showed me the stone that had come through the front window.
